Beautiful, large and rare antique ceramic dish by Jean de Lespinasse, ‘JDL’ famous French ceramicist. Magnificent colours depicting a girl in a fishing village surrounded by stylised fish, fruit and wine.  Circa 1950s   Signed JDL on reverse, with hanging wire already built into dish.  In Excellent condition, no chips or cracks.


Jean de Lespinasse was born in 1896 in the Cotes d’Armor region of France in the town of Brehat. After the second world war, during which he was a member of the Resistance in the South of France, he opened a studio in Nice. Working with his wife, he sold his work through several shops and fairs. They had shops in Saint Maxime from 1958 to 1961, in Saint Paul de Vence and Vallauris (some items are signed Vallauris) All the pottery was produced in the Nice Studio. Items are signed JdL and are sometimes numbered as these formed art of the catalogue he used to sell with. His work is varies and ofter decorative. He used both moulds and turning techniques. He died in 1979.
